Congrats John D. on getting your mile PR yesterday. You should be proud. John is in Jr. High-school and training for his first triathlon. He is on his 5th week of training and already setting personal best. What John is doing right is he is competing against himself to do better than he did yesterday. This is a trait of all successful athletes and successful people. They know their current limits and work to push past them again and again, consistently striving to be their best.
